During the transaction for the Louisiana Purchase, the Americans and the French "met in the middle" on Neutral Ground to negotiate terms of the sale, the money being used for Napoleon's military war chest. Today if you're ever in NOLA during Mardi Gras or for any of our many parades, you'll hear people tell each other, "I'll meet you on the Neutral Ground." which is the median in the middle of the road!
